AI SEARCH VISIBILITY
Be found when search becomes a conversation.
Customers are increasingly asking AI tools to compare options, explain services and recommend businesses. The goal is not to “hack AI” — it is to make your business genuinely useful, easy to discover and supported by enough public evidence to be considered.
Value first → search foundations → AI discoverability. No guaranteed citations, recommendations or rankings.
Who are some reliable emergency plumbers near me in Sydney?
Results may draw from public webpages and other search sources. A business needs enough clear, relevant and trustworthy information to be considered.
SEARCH IS CHANGING
The result is no longer always a list of ten blue links.
Someone can ask a conversational question, get a summary, compare options and follow cited sources without using the old search journey. Traditional search still matters — increasingly, it also supplies the information that AI-assisted experiences retrieve.
Ask
A customer describes the problem naturally: “best”, “near me”, “which one should I choose?” or a detailed situation.
Retrieve
The system looks for relevant public information from search indexes, webpages, profiles and other available sources.
Synthesise
Instead of simply returning links, the assistant may summarise, compare and cite what it found.
Choose
The customer may visit only a few sources — which makes being understood and considered earlier in the journey more valuable.
THE ORDER MATTERS
Value first. Search second. AI visibility as an additional layer.
Do not create a page because a model might cite it. Create something a real customer would be glad they found, then make that information easy for search engines and AI-assisted systems to discover and understand.
One useful page can do three jobs.
The best optimisation begins with the reader. Search and AI discoverability should improve distribution of useful information — not dictate low-value content.
“If the page is not useful without AI, AI optimisation will not rescue it.”
Google’s current guidance makes the same point: useful, unique, non-commodity content and established SEO practices remain the foundation for its generative AI search experiences.

Six practical ways to improve your chances of being found in AI-assisted search.
There is no universal “rank in AI” switch. These actions strengthen the information that search and AI systems can retrieve while also making the website better for customers.
Make important pages crawlable and indexable.
Check robots rules, indexing, canonicals, internal links and your sitemap. If a system cannot access the useful page, the rest of the work has little chance to matter.
Start with Search Console and your CMS-generated sitemap.Answer the customer’s real question — not just the keyword.
Explain the service, who it is for, location, process, trade-offs, pricing context where appropriate, and what someone should know before choosing.
Write for the decision the customer is trying to make.Create information that is difficult to replace.
Use first-hand examples, original photos, case studies, real measurements, expert observations and specific experience instead of rewriting what ten other websites already say.
Useful + unique beats mass-produced “SEO content”.Keep the business identity clear everywhere.
Services, locations, contact details, business profiles and website information should tell the same story. For local businesses, keep Google Business Profile information accurate and current.
Reduce ambiguity about who you are and where you operate.Build evidence outside your own website.
Genuine reviews, relevant mentions, links, profiles and third-party references can support claims you make about the business. Do not manufacture mentions just to influence AI systems.
Your website should not be the only source saying you are credible.Make claims easy to verify.
Use descriptive headings, plain language, dates where freshness matters, source important factual claims and keep structured data consistent with what people can actually see on the page.
Clarity helps customers first — machines benefit too.WHEN CREATING A CONTENT PIECE
A simple quality test before you publish.
- Answer early.Do not make the reader dig through an introduction to reach the useful part.
- Add something original. An example, experience, image, comparison, test, data point or opinion you can defend.
- Support factual claims.Prefer primary and authoritative sources where the claim depends on external evidence.
- Structure for humans.Clear headings, short sections, descriptive links and visuals when they genuinely help.
- Update when reality changes.Freshness is useful when the underlying information changed — not when only the date changes.
WHAT THE PLATFORMS ACTUALLY SAY
Use official guidance where it exists. Do not invent a different SEO theory for every chatbot.
Different assistants retrieve information differently. Some publish concrete webmaster guidance; others simply confirm that they search and cite the public web. That is why the durable strategy is strong public information, strong SEO and genuine authority — with platform-specific technical checks only where they are documented.
Google says existing SEO best practices remain relevant for its generative AI features. There is no special AI schema required, and Google’s newer guide explicitly prioritises valuable, non-commodity content over “AEO/GEO hacks”.
- Allow crawling and indexing.
- Use internal links and good page experience.
- Keep important information in accessible text.
- Keep Business Profile and structured data accurate.
- Do not rely on llms.txt or special “AI markup” for Google Search.
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. To help content be discovered, surfaced and clearly cited, publishers should make sure they are not blocking OAI-SearchBot. Placement is not guaranteed.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /Example only — review your own robots rules before changing them.- Allow OAI-SearchBot where you want search discovery.
- Do not confuse OAI-SearchBot with GPTBot, which relates to training controls.
- ChatGPT referral URLs can include
utm_source=chatgpt.comfor analytics.
Gemini can show links to public websites as sources and related content. Google also states that Gemini Deep Research includes Google Search as a source by default. There is no separate public “Gemini ranking” checklist for publishers in this guidance.
- Strengthen the same public web presence Google Search can retrieve.
- Create pages worth citing, not pages written to imitate chatbot answers.
- Use the Google Search guidance above as the primary webmaster foundation.
Anthropic documents that Claude’s web search can access current web content and return answers with cited sources. Anthropic does not publish a general webmaster “rank in Claude” formula in this documentation.
- Keep important information publicly accessible.
- Make useful claims easy for a search system to retrieve and verify.
- Avoid treating undocumented crawler tricks as established ranking factors.
xAI says Grok searches the web and X live and can provide citations from primary sources across the web. xAI does not publish a conventional webmaster ranking recipe on that product guidance.
- Maintain a strong public website and accurate public business information.
- If X is relevant to your business, keep that presence authentic and current.
- Do not manufacture social activity simply to chase citations.
The practical takeaway: platform-specific technical requirements matter when the platform documents them. Everywhere else, the safest long-term bet is still a crawlable website, people-first content, clear business information and independent evidence.
QUICK VISIBILITY CHECK
Find the weak layer before adding another tactic.
This is not a live ranking test. It is a simple way to decide whether the next priority is technical accessibility, useful content, business clarity or external authority.
1. Can search engines find your important service pages?
2. Are your business details consistent across the website and public profiles?
3. Does your content answer real customer questions with useful, specific detail?
4. Do independent sources support the business with reviews, mentions or relevant links?
SEO IS STILL THE FOUNDATION
AI visibility is not a replacement for good search optimisation.
Google explicitly says its AI search features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. Strong technical SEO, useful content, local relevance and authority therefore remain valuable even as the interface changes.
Technical & discovery
Make it easy for search systems to discover, process and revisit the pages that matter.
- Indexing and sitemap review
- Robots and crawler access
- Canonical and duplicate-content checks
- Crawlable internal links
- Mobile performance and page experience
Relevance & usefulness
Build pages around what customers actually need to understand before they enquire, compare or buy.
- Clear service and location information
- Descriptive titles, headings and link text
- Original examples and supporting visuals
- Accurate business and local information
- Structured data that matches visible content
WHAT BUILDS THE CASE
Your website matters more when the rest of the public web supports the same story.
No single signal should carry the whole strategy. Think of the business as a connected entity: its website, search presence, public profiles, reputation, references and the usefulness of the information it publishes.
Owned information
Service pages, locations, expertise, FAQs, case studies, original images and useful content the business controls directly.
Independent evidence
Reviews, reputable mentions, relevant links, directories and other public sources that independently support the business.
Consistent identity
Names, services, contact details and locations that align instead of creating conflicting versions of the same business.
MEASURE WHAT CHANGES
Visibility work should become evidence, not a monthly list of tasks.
Track what the platforms expose, use a consistent benchmark where direct reporting is limited, and connect visibility back to useful business outcomes.
Do not measure one chatbot screenshot and call it a strategy.
AI answers can vary by wording, time, location and available sources. Use a repeatable prompt set alongside Search Console, analytics and lead tracking so you can see whether the wider visibility system is improving.
- Search Console indexing and search performance
- Google generative AI reporting where available
- Analytics and AI referral traffic
- Repeatable benchmark prompts across relevant assistants
- Leads and conversions from organic discovery
REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
Improve the factors you can control. Do not buy guaranteed AI recommendations.
Search engines and AI assistants choose what they retrieve and show. Good work improves eligibility, relevance, clarity and evidence — it does not give an agency control over the answer.
- Better crawling and indexing
- Clearer business understanding
- More useful, original source content
- Stronger reputation and supporting evidence
- More measurable organic discovery over time
No third party controls what an AI assistant or search engine recommends.
- “Guaranteed ChatGPT recommendations”
- “Guaranteed AI citations in 30 days”
- Secret schema that supposedly unlocks AI rankings
- Mass-producing near-identical pages for every prompt variation
- Fake mentions, reviews or manufactured authority
PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
What businesses should know before treating AI visibility as a new channel.
Is AI Search Visibility different from SEO?
It is connected rather than separate. Strong SEO, useful content, technical accessibility, local information and authority remain the foundation. AI-assisted search changes how that information may be retrieved, summarised and presented.
Can a business “rank #1” in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Grok?
Not in the same stable way people often imagine a traditional ranking position. Responses can change with the query, source set, location, freshness and product behaviour. Work on being a strong, relevant source and measure visibility across a consistent set of real customer questions.
Do we need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google Search. Google explicitly says llms.txt is not needed and does not positively or negatively affect visibility in Google Search. Other services may choose to use different files or protocols, so follow platform-specific documentation rather than assuming one file is universal.
Does schema make a website rank in AI?
There is no special “AI schema” for Google Search. Structured data can help Google understand supported information when it matches the visible page, but it is not a shortcut around useful content, relevance or authority.
Should we create hundreds of pages for every possible AI prompt?
No. Google specifically warns against high-volume, low-value or near-commodity content created primarily to manipulate search or generative responses. Cover meaningful customer needs thoroughly instead of manufacturing a page for every query variation.
Should AI write the content?
AI can assist research, structure, drafting and quality control. The standard should still be accuracy, usefulness, originality and relevance. Automation is a production method — it is not the value of the content.
THE CORE IDEA
Give customers something worth finding — then make that information easy for search and AI systems to discover, understand and verify.
That is the durable strategy: people-first value, strong SEO underneath it, and enough consistent public evidence for newer discovery systems to consider the same business confidently.
